How to spend Christmas in Japan

Although most Japanese are not Christian, they celebrate Christmas or Christmas Eve. However, there are many differences in how people spend Christmas between Japanese and Westerners.

1. Who to be with and what to eat

Christians tend to spend their Christmas and Christmas Eve with their family. It differs from region to region, but in most areas in America, all the relatives gather together and have a wonderful Christmas dinner such as roast turkey and Christmas ham, and fruitcake, eggnog, hot chocolate, and ginger bread are some of the popular dishes for Christmas.
In japan, on the other hand, most people who are in a relationship spend the day together instead of being with family. They have a romantic dinner mostly at a nice restaurant, and exchange some Christmas gifts. Those who spend the day with family usually have a Christmas cake, but most of them are sponge cakes decorated with whipped cream and some strawberries. Since turkey is not so popular in Japan, chickens are often eaten, and surprisingly, KFC fried chicken is the most popular thing to eat for Christmas.

2. What to do
Tons of presents under the Christmas tree, and a cup of milk and some cookies are something familiar for Westerners, but not for Japanese. Santa Claus puts presents right next to kids' pillow while they are asleep in Japan. They have trees in their house, but most of people have no idea what those trees represent or what kind of meanings those decorations have. Recently Santa Claus cosplay has been popular among young girls just like that cosplay is getting super popular during Halloween season.

Japanese culture has been very unique, and it will keep going its own way...

Hope you will have a great Christmas anyway!
